Grumpy Old Man

I’ve been waiting for this moment since having children. The Elder Extroverted Holy One and I had a “Back in our day” moment with the Young Extroverted One and the Neighbor Boy. I can’t remember what we were talking about before the event but I started talking about how when we were kids there weren’t any channels devoted strictly to cartoons. The only cartoons shown were on Saturdays, to which the YEO says, “That sounds boring!”

EEHO responds, “We weren’t bored we went outside to play or we read books.”

Yeah, we also walked up hill both ways through the snow to get to school. Fought off bears with our little slate chalkboards. Crouched in fear when the sky went black as night during an eclipse. We didn’t have TV, we sat on a hill and watched the sun ’till our retinas burned out. Or my favorite phrase of all time: I remember when that Wal-Mart wasn’t there.

Not much going on here.  Just thought that I would drop a post to kick off 2008.

I don’t have much in the way of resolutions (other than to lose the gut that I’ve acquired) just a general sense of gratefulness. Grateful for surviving another year, grateful for the love of a wonderful woman, grateful for two beautiful daughters . . . basically, insert my Christmas post here. Or, just go back and read it.

Talking with the Elder Extroverted Holy One last night after the ball drop I was thinking out loud.  I figure Thanksgiving day would be more appropriate at the end of the year, during which a person looks back at the prior year (for better or worse) and looks ahead to the year to come.  I think that’s when one would be thankful and should celebrate with a big, fat meal to ring in the new year. At least, that’s the feeling I had last night as I looked over at my beautiful bride holding our second child as the Young Extroverted One slept in her bed (for the moment) . . . thankfulness.

Every once in awhile I get a little nostalgic.  It happens mostly when I’m bored and online.  I’ve exhausted my blogroll, done all that I can with my facebook and myspace pages.  So, what else is there to do?  I tend to try some googling of former residences and schools.  For me that’s West Allis, Wisconsin and Woodrow Wilson Elementary School.  I attempt to figure out where former classmates went to high school and search.  But no luck.

How does one look for peeps far removed? My family moved to Melbourne, Florida when I was eight.  That’s a big stretch of time with no contact to be looking for folks on the intertubes.  Heck, I don’t even remember the names of those I went to school with so how can I expect to try to find alumni and actually recognize names? I have already made connections with former schoolmates from my childhood in Melbourne through myspace. It’s just every now and then I like to look a little farther back. I’m currently at work so I’m not doing any drunk googling. That might get a little dangerous.

At least I found the house that I grew up (until eight) in. 1040 South 88th Street. That’s one thing I can remember!
